My name is Maria and I am currently a PhD student in museology at the University of Manchester. I am interested in the possible effects of a social media-empowered public on museum branding. My doctoral research aims to find out how museums create and maintain their brands, the role of social media towards these efforts, and the position of visitors and audiences in this production.
Previous to the UK I lived in Doha, Qatar for almost five years. There I was awarded an MA with Distinction in Museum and Gallery Practice from the University College London; this degree was formative for my present career as it brought me to research the use of Instagram as ‘objects’ – evidence of museum visiting experience, and as a ‘site’ – highlighting the potential of visual media for museum audience research.
On a separate note, although this blog aims to (mostly) trace my professional and academic development, it will also have some thoughts on my personal growth. I hope to reflect as much as I can on the effects of the doctoral programme on my mental and physical health, any suggestions or comments for positive self-care are positively welcome.
Please reach out! I’d love to discuss your research, professional and personal goals, or share pictures of cats.
